School days.............

I was at Quintin Kynaston School with Peter. A group of us set up a kind of gay club for ourselves named Wendy House. Peter and Steven Meaha were the leaders. We were all very bright and a bit arty - well, there was the occasional straight for fun. Apart from the odd name calling in school corridors along the lines of "Poofs!" we probably frightened most of the boys who looked at us with shock and awe. Peter was far ahead of me in almost everything. Particularly sex. I was bookish. Once I referred to an incident in a gay novel. Peter responded: "I do it; you just read about it." It was true and I thought I should do something about 'it' - not long after I had my first sex with a waiter in a club named The Paint Box, where we all used to hang out. We also went to The Black Cap - the days of Mrs Shufflewick and Marc Fleming. The pub announced they were going to have an amateur drag night. Adrella was born. I think it was Steven who gave Peter the name. And there was the party at Peter's home - a police section house in Hyde Park. How did we get away with that one! I saw Peter now and again when I saw him perform or at Steven's funeral but didnt really get to know him again. Looking back at those 'happiest days of your life' I remember Peter's kindness more than anything else. Sure he could bitch but that was the performance. Peter and Steven were models for how to be gay and fearless. And how to live life rather than read about it. And, as I later found out, it was Peter who set me up with the waiter. Thank you Peter.
